Chapter 6

The next morning while Karen was at work, Sidney was getting ready to head to practice when his phone rang. It was the store to verify the delivery time for their furniture. He asked them to wait until after 2p to deliver the rest of the furniture and they agreed. He hung up and left for the arena. A little before 2p, Karen pulled up to the house and as she was walking to the door, a truck pulled up. She saw it was from the furniture store and unlocked the door, waving to the delivery guys to acknowledge they were there. They brought in the things for the upstairs first and got that altogether before bringing in the living room set. Karen told them how she wanted it and everything had it's place. As the movers left, Karen saw a truck from Best Buy and knew it was the tv for the living room. She let the guys in and they were getting everything hooked up when Sidney came in.

Karen came out of the kitchen when she heard talking "don't know stud, think we could've went bigger" she said nonchalantly to get a look from Sidney.

"It's not that big baby."

"Excuse me but what size it that tv?"

"60 inches ma'am" the technician said and she just looked at Sidney.

"What? I want you to have the feel like you're at the arena when I'm away for games."

"Is that the feel of sitting on your lap on the bench?"

"It'll enhance your NASCAR races too baby" he stated matter of fact to her.

"Really? Well I'm intrigued and for that I must give it a try then" she said walking back to the kitchen as Sidney laughed at her.

"I knew you'd see it my way beautiful" he said getting a laugh out of the technicians.

A little while later, Sidney was upstairs working in one of the guest rooms and Karen was downstairs hoping to get her surprise done for him. She had hung the last picture and was standing back admiring it. Sidney was about to come down and Karen hurried up and got the step ladder put away, going into the kitchen to finish up dinner.

Sidney came downstairs and looked at the tv in the living room as he walked past. But something caught his eye and he did a double take when he went back into the room.

"Baby?"

"Yeah?"

"Could you come into the living room for a minute please?"

Karen came walking in "what, I have something on the stove."

"Where did these pictures come from?"

"My guess is they were taken when you won the Stanley Cup. Have you blocked all that out already?"

"No" he said with a slight laugh "These weren't at your house and they weren't at mine before we came back. Where did they come from baby?" he said looking at her.

"I guess someone took them and blew them up, then framed them. I think they look nice and I need to get back to the stove."

Sidney saw her leave and looked back at the pictures. The one directly over the tv was him skating around with the Cup over his head after he just got it. The one to the right of the tv was a picture of him and his dad hugging on the ice, and the third picture was with him, Karen, Taylor and his parents around the Cup at his house in Nova Scotia at the party after all the festivities with the town. He smiled and headed into the kitchen.
"Karen, I'm being serious, where did they come from?"

"Do you not like them? Do you not want them up there?"

"No, I just want to know."

"For the two at Detroit, I got ahold of the photographer who took them and asked if I could have them enlarged for you, which he didn't mind and was happy to oblige and the third, it was taken by Natalie and she gave me a copy to enlarge. It was going to be a present for your parents at first, but figured it needed to be here."

"How do you keep surprising me like this?" he said walking up to her and wrapping his arms around her.

"Because if I told you things, you would want to do them or have someone do it for us and this way it's from me to you."

"I love you so much right now" he said kissing her.

"Only right now? Gee, must need to prove that I'm worthy for more later."

"You will always be worthy of my love if you keep doing this. I think I have the perfect place for the picture you gave me."

"Where do you want to put it?"

"On the wall as you go up the steps. Think it would look nice there."

"You don't want it in your hall of fame room?"

"It would look nice in there but I'd rather everyone see it."

"Then it would look perfect there."

"Ok" he said kissing her then let her go "I'm going to go hang it while you finish dinner." Karen just smiled and nodded her head as they kissed once more and Sidney left her alone.

After dinner, they were sitting in the living room on the couch watching tv. Sidney was laying down with Karen laying half on him, snuggled into his chest. As they were lying there, Karen moved a little and let out a sigh, getting the attention of Sidney.

"What's wrong?"

"Who said anything was wrong?" she said looking up at him.

"Baby, please. There are only two reason why you sigh. One is after we make love and the other is when you've been thinking and something's not right. From the look of us still being dressed and not reeling from an orgasmic high, I'm going with the latter and ask again, what's wrong?"

"I was just thinking about a conversation I had with Nat the other day."

"We were just talking and I mentioned that since we're married and moved into a new house that it feels like we should taking that next step."

"Is it really going to be that simple for us Sid?"

"You mean with it being private and not get out?"

"Yeah, I don't want any of this to distract you with the new season just starting."

"How many times do I need to say it...you and our life together will never distract my playing."

"It's easy to say it until it happens. Getting married is one day but taking care of a baby is everyday. We were already living together before we got married so it was no surprise. We're almost unpacked but that can be done over time. A baby will change the way we do things because we have another person to look after and take care of. You're hockey life will be challenged."

"Then we'll work on it until everything gets under control. Besides, adoption could take a while."

"I know."

"Karen, I don't back away from the things I want. I wanted you and I got that with ease" he said getting hit in the stomach by her making him laugh "I want a baby with you and we will stop at nothing to get that."

"How do you do that? Always turn everything I make impossible into something possible."

"Upstairs" she said getting his hand and helping him up "I want to know how good you are."

"Well who am I to argue a proposal like that." As he stood, Sidney wrapped his arms around her and pressed her body to his letting their lips meet again in a heated kiss. "You sure you don't want to stay down here and incorporate our new funriture in this adventure?"

"I have other plans for the new furniture."

"You will let me know what those plans are, right?"

"Maybe, but I think you like being surprised" she said before kissing him and heading upsatirs. Sidney ran to lock the front door and then up the steps to their bedroom. "Geno's the only one I worry about, but other than that I just love how everything fits perfect between us."

Before long, training camp and preseason games were over and the regular season was a day away. They had gotten everything put in place and just putting the finishing touches on rooms.

Karen hadn't seen or heard Sidney for the last few hours since she's been home and went looking for him. She found him in the room that he took over for all his trophies from playing hockey since he was little. Karen stood in the doorway and watched him for a few minutes.

"So studly" she said getting his attention as he turned his head to glance at her "when we get divorced, half of all this is mine right?" she said smirking but then got serious when he turned fully around.

"I guess I did."

"You planned this didn't you?"

"The house looks great. A lot more space."

"We'd love one" Trina said as all four of them got up and started to walk around.

"Thanks. I'm going to go start dinner while you guys get settled."

"Baby, why don't we go out for dinner tonight?" Sidney said stopping her before she left the room.

"How about I go ready and we can head out for dinner? Let you guys rest for a little bit. If you need extra towels or anything, the cabinet in the bathroom has everything you can think of."

"We'll be fine Sid, go get changed and we'll see you in a little bit."

Sidney left the guest room and walked across the hall to his bedroom. He still heard the shower going and got undressed as he walked into the bathroom. He stepped inside behind Karen and took the soap out of her hands to help wash her body.

Later at lunch...

"What's the matter? Something between you and Sid?"

"No we're great as always."

"Then the problem is???"

"It just feels like Sid and I need to be taking that next step."

"What's the next step?" she asked then saw the look on her friend's face "a baby?"

"I don't want to deprive him of it Nattie but with not being able to give him one of his own, I can't help but wonder if he'll regret it later."

"Karen, there's always adoption."

"I know and before we left Nova Scotia his mom got some pamphlets from some adoption agencies from there to read about. I know it's an option but..."

"They're not yours."

"Yeah. I know it's stupid and everything but I want him to have his own child."

"Sweetie, you can't turn back time."

"I know" she said sadly "how about we talk about happier things? You and Max set a wedding date yet?"

"If we did, you know my girls would be the first to know."

"Ok, but have you at least discussed it at all?"

"Some. I think he wants to get married in his hometown."

"Me thinks you're worried about all the familiy taking over."

"Well yeah, but also his family is French-Canadian. I had a hard enough time trying to understand everyone when I went to visit him over the summer, can you imagine if they incorporate French in the ceremony?"

"Well you do speak some french" Karen said smirking at her friend.

"Shut it Kiki, I'm being serious."

"I know girl and if his family wants it, just make sure it's a prayer or something that you don't have to say or answer after. I'm sure Max wouldn't let you be uncomfortable in your own wedding."

"Yeah I guess."

"Ok, now my turn...what's wrong?"

"Ever since your wedding when he proposed, he really hadn't been wanting to talk about getting any details in place like setting a date or anything."

"You think he's flaking out?" Karen asked concerned.

"I don't know. I think he's more happy at dating then wanting to come over to the dark side of marriage."

"Has he acted like he wants out?"

"No, at least not to me. You saw him at your house, that's normal Max. It's not that I want or need the marriage to know he's mine. He's changed so much but like you wanting the next step with a baby, my next step is being married."

"Want me to talk to him?"

"Knowing you, you'd beat it out of him first then ask why later."

"And that's a bad thing how?" she said smiling after being serious "come on, I won't hurt him...much."

"But if you talk to him, he's going to know I said something."

"So. If he's not getting your hints, mine will make sure he sees them loud and clear."

"Fine, you're going to anyway" Natalie said as they got up to head out and back to work.

"It'll be ok Nattie" she told her friend as she put her arm around her shoulder "I'll be gentle with him."

After work, Karen was heading home and thought about Natalie. She just wanted everything to work out for her this time but wondered if Max was the one to do it. She pulled into the driveway and walked inside seeing Sidney in the living room.

"Hello studly" she said walking up and giving him a very heated kiss.

"Hi honey" Max said coming in from the kitchen interrupting them.

"Hope you don't mind" Sidney said smiling.

"Of course not, I'm always happy to see Max" Karen said walking over to him. Max opened his arms to hug her but Karen brought up her hand and smacked him on the head.

"You know Kiki, I usually know I did something to deserve to be hit by a beautiful woman but I haven't done anything to you."

"That you know of Max" Sidney chimed in.

"You didn't do anything to me Maxwell but I just felt like you needed a shot in the head to get it on straight."

"Alright, what did I do?"

"Its apparently what you haven't done. Are you seriously going to ask my best friend to marry you then thought you never had to deal with it after that?"

"What are you talking about baby?" Sidney came over closer to them and put his arm around his waist.

"I know what she means."

"It seems that Nat is feeling a little neglected that Max here isn't talking about his relationship with her."

Sidney saw the look Karen was giving Max and knew to leave them alone "I'll let you two talk" he said kissing her temple and walking away.

"Look before you lay into me and I get hurt again, I love Natalie and want to marry her."

"Then talk to her about it when she asks you questions Max. All she wants is a date that lets her know you still want her in your life. She doesn't care if you get married next week, next month or in a year. She just wants some stability knowing you're still in this relationship with her."

"I am still in this relationship with her. I just figured if we got engaged we would just get married when it felt right, like you and Sid. The truth is, I don't want a planned wedding I just want to wake up one morning and do it, right then and there."

"Then tell her that Max."

"Then it wouldn't be a surprise Karen."

"You don't have to tell her that part of it, but just tell her about waiting until it felt right. Maybe throw her off and pick a date far enough out that planning isn't a priority yet. Then you'd still have time to surprise her."

"You really love your friend enough to beat me up over it huh?"

"We've been through a lot together and we've been there to pick up the pieces. You're good for each other Maxwell and I don't want to have to hate you if you break her heart."

"What happened with her to feel this way?"

"Why don't you ask her?"

"I've tried and she just mumbles she doesn't want to rehash it and I don't put pressure on her about it."

"Why don't we go sit and I'll tell you." They headed into the living room and sat around the coffee table.

"Before you start can I just say one thing."

"Sure."

"Furniture. It brings a room together, gives it ambiance."

"It'll be delivered tomorrow Max" Sidney said "do I need to leave?"

"No you can stay" she told him and he sat down beside her on a pillow. "There really isn't an easy way to start this so I'll just say it...she got stood up at the alter by a guy she was so in love with and thought he loved her too."

"Wow, I didn't realize it was that" Max said with disbelief.

"Then why would she be pressuring Max to set a date" Sid asked getting a look from Karen "what?" he said and she smiled knowing he always listened.

"I don't think she's pressuring him so much for a date as she is for knowing how long he'll be around. But the guy picked the date and the way I saw it, it was his deadline to see if he really wanted to be married or not."

"More like, he used it let himself off the hook."

"Yeah, only instead of telling her this during the rehearsal dinner or before, he waited until their wedding day and never showed up. She was devasted and couldn't trust a guy for the longest time until she met you Max."

"Even then she took her time."

"Do you blame her? Look at your life before you asked her out. She had every reason to have doubts about hooking up with you."

"But I've changed because of her Karen."

"I know you have" she said sincerely.

Max looked at his watch "I better go, Nat will be home soon. Does she know you assaulted me?"

"Oh yeah definitely."

"Well then let me assure you I will take care of this and we will talk about it" he said kissing her cheek "your friend is in good hands."

"You know a few months ago, I would have been worried about that."

Max just shook his head and laughed "you have a real keeper Siddo. I'll see you guys soon" he said before leaving them alone.

Karen looked to see Sidney was just staring at her "what?"

"You amaze me baby."

"Why cause I can beat up your friends?"

"Well yeah, but because you care so much about yours. You would put their happiness before yours at any moment."

"I do that for you too. It's not a hard decision when you love someone."

"Well before we have dinner, mind if I show you how much I love you?"

"Didn't you get enough last night?"

"See that's the thing, I'm still feeling last night. We only took a break to go to work."

"Is that what we did?" she said smiling. "But what if I'm really hungry?"

"How about I promise to take you out to dinner after?"

"I think I'm liking where this is going."

Sidney broke away after a few minutes and stood up, bringing Karen with him. He grabbed the bottom of her shirt and pulled it over her head. Their lips met again as they stood there kissing and holding on to each other. Sidney took a couple steps back and brought Karen closer to the lounger. He finished undressing her and picked her up, carrying her to the top of the lounger and making her sit there, facing the front.
